John Grisham, best known for his legal thrillers, is back with another good one.
Michael, the young and suave lawyer, employed with a giant law firm in Washington DC, seemingly has really made it. Good job, good firm, good money, good future, and a brilliant surgeon for a wife, a new Lexus….
One fine day, Mike gets caught in an encounter when a street bum gatecrashes into the firm’s office and holds a dozen people as hostages including Mike. Cops kill the man and hostages are rescued.
Everyone gets back to his or her usual lives, but Mike cannot get over the episode. He wants to know who the bum was and why he did what he did.The search leads him to a shocking reality of thousands of poor, homeless people right there in Washington DC!
Michael decides to give up his career and money and work ’’pro bono’’ at a little firm that helps the homeless in legal matters. Even though his salary has been cut in half and his already failing marraige is over, he persists in his new job and ends up going head to head with his former firm.
This story was sad, as it gave a shocking look into the situation of homeless people in America. A brilliantly written book, that keeps you riveted till the end.
